Pennsylvania driver license — step by step
Getting a new Pennsylvania driver license
Apply in person at a PennDOT office. Bring original documents — photocopies and digital documents on a phone are not accepted. Allow 1–2 hours for your first visit including the knowledge test and vision screening.
Required documents
Identity & presence
- ✓US passport or certified birth certificate from vital records (hospital copies not accepted)
- ✓Social Security card, W-2, or pay stub showing full 9-digit SSN
- ✓Proof of lawful presence if non-US citizen: visa, I-94, Green Card, or EAD
Residency & application
- ✓Two proofs of Pennsylvania residency — utility bill, bank statement, lease, or government mail — showing full name and current address, dated within 90 days
- ✓Completed application form DL-180 (available at penndot.pa.gov or at the office)
- ✓Application fee: $30.50 (verify at penndot.pa.gov)
Pennsylvania is one of six US states that does not require SR-22 insurance after a DUI suspension. PennDOT issues a detailed restoration requirements letter specifying exactly what each suspended driver must complete.
Renewing your Pennsylvania driver license
Pennsylvania driver licenses are valid for 4 years. Most Pennsylvania residents can renew online at penndot.pa.gov if their information has not changed. In-person renewal is required for REAL ID upgrades or if your license has been expired for more than a standard grace period.
Renewal options
- Online renewal (Yes): Visit penndot.pa.gov with your license number, date of birth, last 4 SSN digits, and payment for the $30.50 fee
- In-person renewal: Visit any PennDOT office with your current license, proof of address if changed, and payment
- REAL ID upgrade: Must renew in person with full REAL ID documentation (see below)
REAL ID in Pennsylvania
REAL ID enforcement took effect . A REAL ID-compliant Pennsylvania driver license, US passport, or other accepted federal ID is now required for domestic air travel and federal facility access.
